Updated curriculum content released for Years 0-10 English, Te Reo Rangatira, Maths and Pāngarau

19 October 2025

The journey to strengthen the National Curriculum is reaching significant milestones this month with the release of updated Years 0-10 curriculum content. The strengthened National Curriculum will be knowledge-rich and set out the knowledge and practices to be taught to students through responsive teaching and learning programmes. This will provide a foundation for learning that supports equity and excellence for all students.

Years 0-10 English, Te Reo Rangatira, Maths and Pāngarau

The updated curriculum content for Years 0-10 English, Te Reo Rangatira, Mathematics and Statistics, and Pāngarau is now available. These learning areas and wāhanga ako include details for the assessment and aromatawai requirements announced by the Minister last week.

Valuable feedback from the education sector received during consultation earlier this year helped to shape the updated curriculum content for Years 7-10 English and Te Reo Rangatira and Years 9 & 10 Mathematics and Statistics and Pāngarau.

As part of reviewing and finalising the whole 0-10 learning area, changes have been made to the pre-existing Years 0-8 content as well to ensure strong alignment and a well-sequenced progression across the entire learning pathway. These changes are explained in the information sheets and explainer videos.

Here are the links for the information sheets and explainer videos that capture key details about the National Curriculum content:

These learning areas and wāhanga ako will be required to be used from Term 1, 2026 for all state and state-integrated schools. The Minister has agreed to bespoke arrangements in relation to these requirements for Kaupapa Māori education. The Ministry has followed up directly with these kura about these arrangements.

You will be able to find the final curriculum content by visiting these sections of Tāhūrangi

From 28 October, you will be able to find the drafts here:

For NZC, visit this page then click through to the relevant Learning Area https://newzealandcurriculum.tahurangi.education.govt.nz/

For TMoA, visit this page then click through to the relevant Wāhanga Ako https://kauwhatareo.tahurangi.education.govt.nz/mi/kauwhata-reo-online/curricula/national-curriculum/te-t-rewa-marautanga-o-aotearoa/5637154333.c

Years 11-13

The Years 11-13 curricula will be available in Term 1, 2026 to invite wider feedback and help build familiarisation and readiness. There will be no formal requirement to use this content until 2028 (for Year 11 content), 2029 (for Year 12 content), and 2030 (for Year 13 content).

Opportunities for feedback

Your feedback is a hugely important part of the development process. In Term 1, 2026, there will be in-class testing of draft Years 0-10 learning areas and wāhanga ako and wider feedback invited on all draft Years 0-13 content. We’ll have more information for you about this soon. We also welcome your feedback on the improvements we’ve made to the NZC and TMoA landing pages and the refreshed curriculum content pages on Tāhūrangi. We’ve made these changes so they’re easier to access and use.

The new design builds on improvements we made last year and incorporates further user experience insights and focus group feedback we received from teachers and principals.

We’ve also taken inspiration from other jurisdictions that are presenting the curriculum well, including British Columbia, Australia and Singapore.

Next steps

Once the full and final national curriculum has been formally released by mid-2026 and is in use, the Government intends to move into a regular update cycle for the NZC and TMoA, as occurs in other jurisdictions, to avoid the need for wholesale reform.

Implementation support

We understand that effective implementation and sustainable change cannot be achieved overnight – it is a shared and ongoing commitment. To support the updated curriculum timeline for schools and kura, implementation supports will be released over time to ensure that teachers and kaiako are supported every step of the way.

These supports will include:

  • Quick guides and revised teacher support materials to help use structured literacy approaches
  • Targeted professional learning and development (PLD) including subject specific PLD and change leadership PLD
  •  Teacher Only Day and Curriculum Day materials to support leaders to lead curriculum implementation in 2026
  • Curriculum Advisory Service will support you to unpack the curriculum during Term 4 and beyond
  • Curriculum Roadshows for Years 0-8 and 9-13 for school and kura leaders
  • Regional workshops to unpack the curriculum from Term 4 in November
  • Targeted Structured Literacy Approaches and writing PLD for every school with students in Years 7-10
  • Subject Associations to deliver aligned supports and resources focused on Year 9 students (through Networks of Expertise (NEX))
  • Cross-curricula resources for teachers of Year 9 students, these include:
    • annual and unit plans
    • learning kits with lesson plans.
