Over 200 Teachers Collaborating on New Senior Curriculum
12 March 2026
Work is now underway on the detailed draft of New Zealand’s new senior secondary curriculum for Years 11–13, with subject associations, education leaders, and 212 Subject Advisors from schools and kura across the country contributing to its development.
Subject Advisors were appointed late last year following a strong expression‑of‑interest process that attracted 340 applications. The group includes experienced teachers, heads of departments, and education leaders with specialist subject knowledge, curriculum expertise, and a strong understanding of knowledge‑rich learning pathways that support successful learner transitions.
Subject Advisors are working in small, focused teams led by curriculum design experts from the Ministry. Their role includes creating detailed subject content, with some Advisors serving as content reviewers to ensure quality, clarity, and national consistency.
The detailed draft will be released for consultation in three groups:
- Group 1 - May - June
- Group 2 - June to July and
- Group 3 - July to August.
You can download a list of the subjects that are currently proposed in each group that will be part of the consultation by clicking here.
Subjects will be consulted on as a whole, for example, Year 11-13 Mathematics, Year 11-13 History, and Year 12-13 Psychology, to demonstrate the development of the subject across learning years.
Consultation will be open to educators, whānau, sector partners, and all New Zealanders who wish to participate. Feedback received will help refine the final curriculum, which will be gradually implemented from 2028 to 2030.
Further information about the consultation process will be made available in the coming weeks.
