Maths and pāngarau resources coming soon

26 September, 2024

Funding has been confirmed for high-quality maths and pāngarau instructional resources for Years 0-8 that were announced by the Government as part of its Make it Count Maths Action Plan in August.

The Government has announced today that $30 million will be committed to the resources for 2025.

Resources will be available for teachers, kaiako and students and will include, for example, workbooks, teacher guidance and lesson plans for the 2025 school year. They will align with the new curriculum, so they reflect the maths concepts and skills students need to learn.

The resources will also provide teachers and kaiako with immediate and practical support recognising that education leaders and practitioners across the country need support with reducing their cognitive load while they build confidence and fluency in the curriculum.

Next steps for securing resources:

Maths

  • Approved/funded suppliers will be published on Tāhūrangi no later than 18 October – follow the hyperlinks to each supplier’s webpage to see what package you will receive.
  • Schools and kura will be able to select from a range of quality resources from 21 October which the Ministry will pay for.
  • The ordering process is easy with pre-populated roll data for each year group – you simply choose your supplier for each phase of learning and the Ministry will do the rest.
  • For delivery prior to the start of Term 1, orders must be received by 4 November.
  • Schools can expect to receive their resources from 20 January 2025.
  • Only resources that meet our criteria will be funded – this includes aligning with the refreshed mathematics and statistics learning area and supporting best pedagogical practice.
  • Schools who have already invested in maths resources will be able to update their materials to ensure the refreshed curriculum is supported.
  • We are unable to reimburse schools for materials already purchased as these are unlikely to align to the refreshed curriculum.

Other supports will include:

Support for te reo Māori in Māori-medium and kaupapa Māori education

Following the Government’s announcement that funding for the maths and pāngarau teaching resources for all Years 0-8 students will come from Te Ahu o te Reo Māori which will come to a close at the end of 2024, there will be ongoing opportunities for te reo education across the education system.

There will be ongoing provision for te reo Māori professional learning and development for te reo Māori teachers and kaiako working in Māori medium and kaupapa Māori education who need to continue growing their te reo Māori capability.
Additionally, six years of graduates from Te Ahu o te Reo Māori will continue to share and grow their Māori language capability in their classrooms and beyond.

For the education workforce:

  • There are a significant number of te reo Māori learning opportunities at both beginner and advanced levels through the three Wānanga and other tertiary education services.
  • There are private providers and a number of tools available to support teachers who wish to develop their te reo capabilities on their own, such as Māori language books and apps.
  • The Ministry also provides a range of initiatives including through professional development, developing te reo Māori resources for teachers and learners, and through providing targeted funding to those schools and kura who teach their programmes through the Māori Language.
